England v India 4th Test Betting Preview

The pendulum of momentum has swung back and forth in this test series between England and India, but it is the hosts who find themselves with the momentum as we approach the fourth test. In a dominant bowling performance, England took less than a session to take the six remaining Indian wickets and tie the series at 1-1.

The bookmakers make England the more likely of the sides to triumph at 9/5 with Boylesports, whilst the draw is at 11/10 with Unibet. India, on the back of their disastrous performance at Lord’s, are priced at 5/1 with Betfred to pick up a second and unlikely win.

India were second best in every single session played, and despite finally picking up an impressive victory away from home at Lord’s, Dhoni’s team seemed to regress back to the passive side that hadn’t won away in 13 matches.

We’ve wrote in previous reports that Rohit Sharma should be rested to make way for Ashwin, but once again Dhoni and his men were far too defensive. That defensive nature is what’s leading to so many poor and passive performances away from home, and this was just the latest.
It definitely helped England that Cook won the toss as it seemed to further the defensive mind set of the Indians. Dhoni seemed content to loss the toss, whilst Cook’s men went out and put up a bit total that India never looked like troubling.

Cook’s men scored a first innings 569 and followed it up with 205. On both occasions, England had the luxury of being able to declare and await a response from a lacklustre Indian side.
India were far more attacking in the second test and for me that’s the only way to get back on track. Dhoni seemed to drop all of the successful tactics from the second test and reverted to an illogical and negative approach. Deservedly, India were always two steps behind England, as opposed to the step ahead they were in the previous outing.

Whilst we’re busy pointing the finger as captain Dhoni, we shouldn’t neglect to mention what a let-down his middle order has been. Virat Kohli is struggling to score as many runs as half of the bowlers in the order, whilst Pujara has looked threatening on several occasions, only to inexplicably do something stupid.

The bowling performance was extremely poor at Southampton and England took a positive and attacking approach in jumping all over that. Surely Dhoni will find a way to be more positive on Thursday, but India are bound to be fragile. Cook should be alert to predictable and negative bowling, and I expect the hosts to punish mistakes early and often.

I just don’t trust India like I did at the start of this series, and I’d like to back England to win at 9/5 with Boylesports.
